Our History

How we started

Wednesday started on September 1st, 2020, founded by Ali and Mac.

Mac was working with one of the fastest-growing unicorns in Southeast Asia. Ali had been working remotely for some of the largest organizations in the world. Both were building critical systems that powered millions of simultaneous transactions, operations, and workloads.

Wednesday started with one idea. A small team with the right mindset, skill set, and direction can change the trajectory of a business. Our focus then was building digital products. We looked at our own experience and realized that the products we had worked on succeeded, and gave those businesses a competitive advantage, because of the kind of decisions we made while building them. So we set out to build small teams of craftsmen and women who would make the same small decisions we would. Those decisions are what let a business stay flexible and competitive as markets and other forces shift.

Building for startups

From 2020 to 2026, we worked with many leading startups, a number of which went on to become unicorns. If you carry a smartphone, there is a good chance the products we built are already on it.

The work was product engineering services. Funded startups came to us with a problem. Sometimes it was as simple as extra hands. Sometimes it ran deeper. We took on whatever it was:

  • augmenting their team
  • shaping product strategy
  • building parallel products
  • working out technical architecture
  • solving scaling bottlenecks
  • solving user acquisition, retention, and engagement problems

Why we pivoted

Wednesday was a craft-focused shop until the end of 2025. As AI made craft cheaper, the market for craft, and the way people valued it, changed. We had two choices. We could compete on price, or pivot to something else.

At the start of 2026, we pivoted. We looked at our portfolio and saw that more than 60 percent of the work we had done was for BFSI, mostly for mid-market firms in it:

  • insurance companies
  • NBFCs
  • payments businesses
  • capital markets
  • credit risk companies
  • brokerages

While the rest of the world moved fast with AI, the enterprises we had an inside view into were held back by legacy problems. They could not move at that pace, mostly because of:

  • data silos
  • different products bought from different vendors
  • vendor lock-ins
  • cultural friction

So we sharpened our focus to one thing: helping enterprises transform with AI. These firms are wary of paying for time and materials. Most of the consultants who sold them that approach sold them year-long roadmaps designed mainly to keep the billing going. They are just as wary of buying a product, because that leaves them with the headache of making it work inside their ecosystem. What they want is a solution that fits their ecosystem and gets them the result they are after.

We build those solutions, or bring ones already built, and deploy them by working alongside our customers inside their business, to move the metrics that matter and get them the ROI the software should. The way we deliver is a forward-deployed motion. To learn how it works, read our forward deployment handbook.
